The Yankees see Clubs and Taillon as high risk, high reward

NEW YORK (AP) – Brian Cashman knows New York Yankees takes big risks by adding pots Corey Kluber and Jameson Tallion, who have combined to throw a round in the last two seasons, and release Masahiro Tanaka.

“Ultimately, it may be a better strategy to win two for – current theory – the prize of one,” the New York CEO said on Friday.

After losing to the eventual AL champion Tampa Bay Rays in a five-game division, allowed the Yankees Tanaka, James Paxton and JA Happ to become free agents, signed Kluber to a $ 11 million one-year contract and acquired Taillon from Pittsburgh for four prospects.

To drop wages below $ 210 million in luxury taxes, Cashman traded right-handed Adam Ottavino to rival Boston and saves $ 7.15 million.

“The last thing I wanted to do was put him in the hands of our competitors, but in the end I’m not afraid to do business with anyone if it serves what our purposes must be, and so yes, it was a pay flexibility maneuver,” said Cashman.

New York replaces Ottavino with right-hander Darren O’Day, who has a pending deal of $ 2.5 million. The Yankees’ other big offseason move was to sign AL batsman DJ LeMahieu to a $ 90 million six-year contract.

“He is obviously underestimated and silent. There is no doubt that he is one of the leaders and someone that so many people in our clubhouse not only want to look after but also look up to, says manager Aaron Boone.

New York enters spring training with a projected rotation of Gerrit Cole, Deivi García, left-hander Jordan Montgomery, Kluber and Taillon.

Clubs and Taillon are among four major pitching issues. Kluber, a right-hander who turns 35 in April, is a two-time AL Cy Young Award winner but has hit a round since he was hit on the right forearm on May 1, 2019 by a comebacker. He tore a muscle in his right shoulder on July 26 last year and ended his season after an inning.

Taillon, a 29-year-old right-winger, has not struck since May 1, 2019 and is returning from the Tommy John operation.

“We understand some of the risk with that, but we are also extremely happy with what we think they can be. And I think if it goes well, that’s the expectation, at best these are guys you can turn to in a post-season situation and match against other fantastic pitchers, says Boone. “The ceiling is high for them. I think that is the right way to go for us, although of course there are some risks there. ”

Luis Severino, who is limited to three regular season games since 2018, is expected to return in late summer, according to Cashman, when he recovers from the Tommy John operation on February 27 last year. Domingo Germán will be in spring training after missing last season while serving a suspension under baseball violence policy, and the Yankees plan to talk to him at training camp.

Cashman spoke early in the off-season with Tanaka’s agent Casey Close, but eventually decided not to try to sign the 32-year-old. reunited with its former team in Japan. New York may try to sign 37-year-old outfielder Brett Gardner, the longest-serving Yankees player.

“He’s been a great Yankee. And then we will see how things happen here in the coming weeks, but obviously he is still on the board, says Cashman.

Boone was with Ottavino at Yankee Stadium on Monday. The shipper threw when he was told he had been split into Boston.

“It was a little weird,” Boone said. “He will be tough on us, especially with many of our rights.”

New York’s estimated lineup includes substitute striker Aaron Hicks along with eight right-handed strikers. Cashman has asked how to get a left-handed hitter.

“We have not found a match that has made enough sense for us to downgrade from the talent level to a certain position,” he said.

Boone is confident catcher Gary Sánchez will return from his third straight split season. He hit a worst career .147 with 10 homers and 24 RBIs along with 64 strikeouts in 156 at-bats, then bedded for five of seven post-season games in favor of Kyle Higashioka.

Sánchez played winter ball in the Dominican Republic.

“I know he is looking forward to proving that last year was a pleasure. And we look forward to him justifying our commitment, says Boone.

Sánchez was disturbed by his lack of playing time after the season.

“If we can advance, he would probably have been my first start in the Game Series,” Boone said. “Gary and I have had conversations since then, but also before, and my relationship with Gary is strong.”

Third baseman Gio Urshela is expected to be ready for the opening day. He is recovering from surgery on December 3 to remove a bone chip from his right elbow.

“I know he’s already hitting a tee and taking ground balls and throwing,” Boone said.
