The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences named Belden an annual Emmy® winner for technology and technology for ongoing innovation
ST. LOUIS – (BUSINESS MANAGEMENT) –
Belden Inc. (NYSE: BDC), a leading global provider of specialized network solutions, is pleased to announce that it has been designated for 2020 Technology & Engineering Emmy® winner by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) for its “Standardization and commercialization of television – Broadcast, hybrid electric and fiber optic camera cable and connectors.”
Since 1949, the Technology & Engineering Emmy® Awards have recognized talented and innovative leaders and companies that enable the TV world.
Belden is honored for his significant impact on the broadcasting industry and his important role in standardizing SMPTE cables. When video switched from analog to digital, copper camera cable could not transmit digital signals over long distances. The industry needed a way to move digital video over long distances using fiber while providing power to cameras.
“Belden had excellent knowledge of broadcast technology and Mohawk – a Belden brand – had a fantastic team of fiber experts,” explains Belden, Vice President of Global Research and Development. Martin Van Der Burgt, who sat on the SMPTE Standards Committee and served as the lead design engineer. “We came together to make this idea work.”
The result: development and commercialization of the first SMPTE cables that meet North American standards. Commercially available since 1999, Belden SMPTE cables are still used today for various indoor and outdoor applications. The electric and fiber optic hybrid cable and connectors were standardized as SMPTE 304M / 311M. This innovation accelerated the adoption of digital video and enabled networks to invest in digital camera equipment with confidence.
“NATAS is very pleased to recognize Belden’s continued contribution to the television industry,” said Robert P. Seidel, Chairman of the NATAS Technology & Engineering Achievement Committee. “The company is renowned for its innovation and market leadership.”
“Belden was there to create industry standards as we followed the path from analog to digital,” says Van Der Burgt. “Our SMPTE cable has functioned through technological changes and is an integral part of TV broadcasts. Now the industry is moving to the next path, which is ultra-high definition – and Belden is ready to support that transition as well. ”
Belden introduced a new solution to support the transition to ultra-high definition (UHD) for 4K video. Belden’s 4K UHD Coax cable for 12G-SDI supports 4K or UHD content without a review to IP or fiber. It maintains a 12 GHz bandwidth and maximizes 4K / UHD transmission distances over one only link, decreasing bulk associated with double link and four link configurations. Manufacturers can now integrate 12G-SDI ports into equipment to support traditional coax or IP or fiber upgrades to support 4K / UHD transmission.
“You can have the best products in the world,” says Van Der Burgt, “but if you do not have the right people who understand technical issues and why certain methods are better, they will not become industry standards. The enormity of a cable and a connector that wins an Emmy Award is phenomenal and incredibly special. ”
Rose Lockwood, Belden’s global broadcasting director, helped work with broadcasting networks to facilitate the transition from analogue cable to digital cable.
